Summary

A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens。 It was first published by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843。 It tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from a supernatural visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come。

The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim。 The book was written and published in early Victorian era Britain, a period when there was strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions together with the introduction of new customs, such as Christmas trees and greeting cards。 Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales。

merry christmas everyone!i just adore this story, and i adore christmas。 i love how dickens describes the chaotic merriment that makes christmas so special, when scrooge is visited by the ghost of christmas present。 it’s just perfect。 i have always been a fan of the tale of a christmas carol (muppets christmas carol superiority) but this was my first time actually reading the book。 i’d heard bad things about dickens - mainly that his writing was incredibly boring - but i didn’t find that at all! merry christmas everyone!i just adore this story, and i adore christmas。 i love how dickens describes the chaotic merriment that makes christmas so special, when scrooge is visited by the ghost of christmas present。 it’s just perfect。 i have always been a fan of the tale of a christmas carol (muppets christmas carol superiority) but this was my first time actually reading the book。 i’d heard bad things about dickens - mainly that his writing was incredibly boring - but i didn’t find that at all! i actually found him to be fun and silly in a way that completely suited the book。 whether that changes when/if i read any of his longer works though, i don’t know。 。。。more

I don’t know why I always had it in my head that the prose of this book would be too long winded and laborious to read, but it wasn’t at all。 Thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

I LOVE this story and reading retellings of it。 It's my favorite Christmas trope/story。 That and the repeating a day over and over。aa I LOVE this story and reading retellings of it。 It's my favorite Christmas trope/story。 That and the repeating a day over and over。aa 。。。more

I've read this before。 Yes, the style is occasionally a bit Victorian (a bit indirect and flowery) but I noticed many wonderfully clever turns of style and phrase this time。Tiny Tim is by now a stereotype--he's unrealistically sweet and good, especially for a sick child in pain。 However, this was an era in which one had to expect you might not raise all your kids to adulthood。 Tim is meant to be the best distillate of those much loved children and it's a pity his character doesn't get to be a bi I've read this before。 Yes, the style is occasionally a bit Victorian (a bit indirect and flowery) but I noticed many wonderfully clever turns of style and phrase this time。Tiny Tim is by now a stereotype--he's unrealistically sweet and good, especially for a sick child in pain。 However, this was an era in which one had to expect you might not raise all your kids to adulthood。 Tim is meant to be the best distillate of those much loved children and it's a pity his character doesn't get to be a bit more rounded。Scrooge at times has struck me as being a bit too easily turned back to goodness, but this is a very distilled story and a turn of heart and rebirth of spirit that in the real world is achieved by a bit of quicker magic for our edification。This is indeed a classic, it's held onto its magic most well。 。。。more

The story we all know and love, watching many an adaptation of it every Christmas。 But actually reading the source material yourself, YOU get to paint a vivid picture of Scrooge's journey from miser to a man with a thankful heart。 It is wonderfully written, often with a humorous wink to the reader, while also being quite scary! The introduction in this version was very informative of what the mid 1800s were like and why Dickens wrote the novella! A True Tradition to Be Carried All YearA wonderful story that is best as the original with classic Christmas spirit and a powerful message of changing yourself for the better。 Dickens paints a fantastic setting that turns from dark night to light morning full of hope。

I've read A Christmas Carol before, but I wanted to read it to the kids (10, 7, 6) this year。 This illustrated version was recommended, and I'm so glad I picked it。 I didn't realize that there would be short stories as well。 I had only read one of them, but I enjoyed them all! A classic I've wanted to read during the holidays for years。 I've been a fan of the 1951 movie version since I was actually Tiny Tim, and the story follows and feels just like that old B&W movie。While some might struggle with Dickens, I have always found him an interesting author。 His descriptions are often exquisite, couched in the vernacular of his times, but still feeling fresh and alive。"Reflect upon your present blessings—of which every man has many—not on your past misfortunes, of which al A classic I've wanted to read during the holidays for years。 I've been a fan of the 1951 movie version since I was actually Tiny Tim, and the story follows and feels just like that old B&W movie。While some might struggle with Dickens, I have always found him an interesting author。 His descriptions are often exquisite, couched in the vernacular of his times, but still feeling fresh and alive。"Reflect upon your present blessings—of which every man has many—not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some。” 。。。more

I came for Neil Gaiman, but ended up getting a kind of subversive story about middle class indifference。 Also, Jacob Marley is scary as hell。 Lastly, I wanted to just be indifferent myself, because I did not want to be one of those people who’s like, the Spirit of Christmas!, or whatever。 But maybe it’s the combination of Gaiman’s soothing tones, or the warm puppy in my lap。 Or maybe Dickens is a decent writer who managed to communicate how connected we all are and our indifference to suffering I came for Neil Gaiman, but ended up getting a kind of subversive story about middle class indifference。 Also, Jacob Marley is scary as hell。 Lastly, I wanted to just be indifferent myself, because I did not want to be one of those people who’s like, the Spirit of Christmas!, or whatever。 But maybe it’s the combination of Gaiman’s soothing tones, or the warm puppy in my lap。 Or maybe Dickens is a decent writer who managed to communicate how connected we all are and our indifference to suffering doesn’t just hurt the other person。 So I cried。 I simultaneously hate that about myself and recognize it’s the only appropriate response。 。。。more
